Energize Your Body

The first step in energizing yourself is to maximise your physical energy.

Exercise

Burning energy makes energy – being active really does make you feel more energetic. And laziness only makes you feel sluggish. Getting up and moving may take a bit of willpower or even lots of persuasion, but if you get into the habit of getting off [your seat] when you start nodding off, you will find that your productivity increases, and you may find a few other things as well. Try to at least stand and move every 90 minutes. More on exercse and energy

Breathe

Every time you breath, cells are replenished with oxygen and help release energy to boost your bodys essential functions. Most people breathe incorrectly - far too shallow, using only the rib cage and not the abdominal muscles. When I am concentrating hard, I often find myself not breathing at all!! Spend a few minutes and learn proper breathing techniques, then practice every day until it becomes a new invigorating habit. The key to maximum oxygen intake and carbon dioxide expenditure is breating in through the nose and out through the mouth. Find out more about correct breathing techniques

Adjust Your Sitting Posture

A bad sitting posture puts the body under enormous stress, prevents you from breathing correctly and can leave us exhausted by the end of the day. Avoid slumping forward - get those stomach and back muscles engaged to sit upright. Good posture helps to keep the natural curves of the spine relaxed and stops you getting stress in your shoulders, which can leave you with a dull headache. Make sure your monitor is the right height, and if you use a laptop, get an ancilliary keyboard. Try this mini chair-yoga workout.

Stretch

Did you know that a simple thing like getting up from your chair and moving a little can work wonders for your productivity? If you are on the phone, just stand up and stretch. Turn side to side, bend your knees and stretch your calves, and stretch out those arms and fingers to release the tension from typing or mouse work. Take some deep breaths to increase your oxygen intake. Stretching will get the kinks out of your neck and shoulders and increase your blood circulation. Try this mini chair-yoga workout.

Walk

Go for a walk in the park, take the stairs or hand-deliver a file to another department. Getting the blood flowing will increase your metabolic rate and decrease your drowsiness. Hold a walk meeting - I am sure your meeting partner will appreciate the break also.
