Somnoplasty Sleep Disorder Treatment
Severe sleep disorders are often caused by physical deformities,
which require surgical procedures.
Typcial adult corrective surgery includes:
- Tracheostomy
- Uvulo-Palato-Pharyngoplasty [UPPP]
- Mandibular Myotomy
- Laser Assisted Uvuloplasty [LAUP]
A less intrusive procedure is called Somnoplasty, using RF
technology.
RF Procedure [Somnoplasty]
A more recent surgical procedure for snoring and sleep apnea is
called somnoplasty. This FDA approved treatment for snoring uses
radio waves to shrink tissue in air passages and eliminate snoring.
The procedure is also known as radiofrequency volumetric tissue
reduction of the palate.
The treatment involves piercing the tongue, throat or soft palate
with a special electrode needle, which is then connected to a radio
frequency generator.
The inner tissue is then heated to 158 to 176 degrees. This takes
about 30 minutes.
The inner tissues shrink, but the outer tissues, which may contain
such things as taste buds, are left intact.
Several treatments may be required.
Check with your insurance company to see if they cover this treatment.
Somnoplasty Used For Nasal Obstruction
Nasal obstruction from a deviated septum, large nasal bones or
a collapse of the nasal valve can often be effectively treated with
simple surgical procedures combined with Somnoplasty.
